Welcome to SWACO

SWACO is the Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio.  We are one of 52 solid waste districts created by the Ohio General Assembly in 1989. These districts were established with the mission of reducing reliance on landfills. Acting upon that mission, SWACO provides consumers recycling opportunities around Franklin County at over 200 recycling drop off-locations.  To help residents dispose of Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) in an environmentally safe manner, a permanent HHW drop-off site at 1249 Essex Ave., Columbus, OH is available to residents free of charge.  We schedule multiple mobile collections for HHW during the spring, summer and fall.  For trash that cannot be recycled, we operate the Franklin County Sanitary Landfill and two transfer stations.

SWACO's community outreach program works with communities in SWACO's jurisdiction (Franklin County, OH) to provide assistance with marketing, contracts, and other needs in order to keep recycling in the forefront.

Central Ohio sports fans have the opportunity to recycle at many of the local arenas and stadiums. SWACO recycling containers dot the concourses, while fans are encouraged to recycle via message boards and public address announcements. We also offer leadership and advice for businesses wishing to begin waste diversion programs. Our community outreach and partnerships also include exhibits at the world renown Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, COSI (The Center for Science and Industry), and The Martin Luther King Arts Complex.

Tours of SWACO’s Franklin County Sanitary Landfill continue to be a big hit with students of all ages. Each year, thousands of students see first-hand the results of our throwaway society. Other program offerings provided by SWACO include assistance to school districts for the implementation recycling programs. SWACO's environmental lending library was donated to the Grange Insurance Audubon Center (GIAC).  Please visit the GIAC to learn more.

There is much more about today's SWACO that we would be glad to share with you.  Please visit our other website pages to learn more or call at 614-871-5100 for more information.
