Bring Me Back wins first place award

glass PRism award

SWACO and public relations firm, FrazierHeiby, win first place PRism award for the Bring Me Back program.

Bring Me Back is an educational program which was launched last fall and is aimed at encouraging residents to recycle their plastic bags at participating local retail locations and to use reusable shopping bags, when possible. The program is on-going and reminds residents not to put their plastic bags in curbside recycling containers, as many recyclers don’t accept them, and the bags can disrupt the recycling process.

SWACO and FrazierHeiby received the PRism for a Multifaceted Community Relations Campaign which was awarded by the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) – Central Ohio Chapter. Nominations in this category are evaluated upon how well they ‘improve or maintain an organization’s relationship or image in the communities in which it operates.’

As part of the Bring Me Back program’s community outreach last year, the program was made available at nearly two dozen local grocery stores during a four-week period in beginning in October 2016. During the program’s in-store promotion, SWACO, the city of Columbus and partnering organizations sought to raise awareness of the program and more than 100 retail locations in Franklin County which accept plastic bags for recycling.

The community outreach campaign included the following elements:

  • Development of creative elements including a program name and logo as well as a digital tool kit for communities and retailers to download and to which their logos could be added.
  • In Store Marketing Materials – SWACO, in partnership with Frazier Heiby, created instore and event posters, fact sheets, window and door clings, wraps for recycling bins, cart corral signs, lapel pins for associates and shopping lists which reminded people not to forget their plastic or reusable bags. The materials were made available free to area retailers and local communities for use.
  • Community Event Education – Local communities were invited to add their logos and download fact sheets and posters to hand out at public events.
  • Targeted digital marketing ads and e-mails – SWACO partnered with WBNS 10TV to deliver digital ads (sent by e-mail and viewed at 10tv.com) to residents living or shopping in the Morse Rd. and Clintonville neighborhoods during the month of October 2016.
  • Social Media Campaign – SWACO promoted the Bring Me Back program regularly during the month of October on Twitter and Facebook.

SWACO continues to promote the Bring Me Back program at community outreach events, during stakeholder meetings, during tours of the landfill and on social media.

SWACO also continues to look for ways to expand the program and increase the community’s awareness about the importance of properly recycling of plastic films and bags, and to encourage the use of reusable bags.
