Franklin County is home to hundreds of events each year which make our county a great place to live, work and visit. Our community is also placing greater importance on waste diversion methods including recycling. In 2016, Franklin County’s rate of recycling rose to an all-time high of 45-percent.
Every year, over a million tons of waste is safely disposed of at the Franklin County Sanitary Landfill. Seventy percent of all the waste at the landfill could have been recycled or composted and has a potential value of $41 million.
SWACO’s Recycling Container Loan Program is designed to help Franklin County events recycle materials such as glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles and metal cans.
The Recycling Container Loan Program makes available:
- 75 ClearStream recycling containers available for rent, and
- 75 ClearStream waste containers available for rent.
Using ClearStream containers for recycling, like the one pictured above, is proven to increase the amount of recyclables collected and reduce the amount of non-recyclables tossed into the recycling stream.
Local events are eligible to use SWACO’s ClearStream portable recycling and waste containers if they are located in Franklin County and are open to the public. Participation in the program requires a Request Form, security deposit, execution of a Container Loan Agreement, a post-event report of the quantity of waste generated and recyclables diverted during the event.
In addition, SWACO respectfully requests at least 2 weeks notice prior to the start of the event in order to process the request.
In 2016, the Columbus Arts Festival, Dublin Irish Festival and Summer Jam Westgate participated in the program. Together, these events diverted more than 8 tons of recyclables from the landfill.
Users may request up to 150 containers for their event. The containers are lightweight and portable. If authorized for use, the containers may be picked up at SWACO, 4239 London Groveport Rd., Grove City, OH 43123. SWACO is open 8 am-5 pm Monday through Friday.
ELIGIBILITY & APPLICATION
All events open to the public and located in Franklin County are eligible to apply. SWACO requests two (2) weeks advance notice prior to the event start date. A request form can be downloaded here. Approved requests will require a signed Container Loan Agreement before containers may be picked up.
In exchange for use of the equipment, SWACO requires a security deposit of $250.00 for every container package requested. Each package includes 25 containers. The deposit is due upon execution of a Container Loan Agreement in the form of a check made payable to SWACO, and shall be returned to User pursuant to the terms and conditions of this Agreement.
In order to measure the impact of the community’s recycling efforts, SWACO requests that the amount of waste generated and recyclables diverted during the event be captured and reported to SWACO’s Programs Administrator.
