If you're a resident of Franklin County, there may be a curbside collection service for household recyclables in your community. Most of these programs will accept glass and plastic bottles and containers, cardboard, newspaper, and aluminum cans. What do I do with my old appliances?
On July 27, 1992, the Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio Sanitary Landfill began segregating and recycling appliances. An additional disposal fee is charged to cover the extra labor and recycling costs. Residents can take their unwanted appliances directly to Central City Auto Parts, 276-9617 or Bargain House, 279-6416. Bargain House offers pick-up for appliances with freon for a fee. City of Columbus residents should call bulk pick-up at 645-3111.
What do I do with old furniture?
If you have furniture that is in usable condition or old appliances that are still in working order, MAP Furniture Bank offers a free pickup service. Call them at 614-272-9544 or log onto www.mapfurniturebank.org.
What do I do with my old car battery?
State law bans lead acid batteries from landfill disposal. You can dispose of your lead acid batteries at the Crown Battery Company and at all locations of Advance Auto Parts, AutoZone, and BP ProCare (full-service automotive repair).
What do I do with my old tires?
State law prohibits the disposal of whole or shredded tires. SWACO is currently researching the recycling potential and energy value of scrap tires. We recommend you pay the small fee charged to dispose of your tires when purchasing new tires for your vehicle. At this time, the only authorized tire disposal facility is Liberty Tires located at 2829 Jackson Pike. Call 614-871-8097 for information.
What do I do with my old paint, paint thinner, pesticides, or cleansers?
Household hazardous wastes are materials used in the home that can cause injury or are harmful if disposed of improperly. When you purchase items that may create household hazardous waste, SWACO recommends that you buy only what you need, try to use it all up, and donate any leftovers to a school, charity, or friend. What do I do with my used motor oil?
Used motor oil should not be put into household garbage, dumped on the ground or poured down the drain. For more information about locations that take used oil and antifreeze.
What do I do with my yard waste?
Try backyard composting! A compost pile or bin is a great way to recycle yard waste and enhance your home's gardens. Also, many Franklin County communities offer curbside yard waste collection services. Call your local government offices to determine whether your community offers this service. Residents and businesses from most communities in Franklin County can take their leaves, grass and brush (free of charge!) to Kurtz Brothers Compost Facility, 2850 Rohr Road, Groveport (614) 491-0868, or to the Ohio Mulch Compost Facility, 4120 Roberts Road, Upper Arlington (614) 921-9330.
