The Sustainable Side of the Super Bowl

2

This Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers will go head-to-head in Super Bowl LVIII at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada. While game plans, those in attendance, the commercials, and the half-time show are sure to generate a lot of comments, the stadium's sustainability features should get an honorable mention too.

Allegiant Stadium is a 1,750,000-square-foot facility that opened in 2020 and is U.S. Green Building Council LEED Gold certified – a universally recognized certification for efficiency, sustainability, and cost-saving green efforts.

The design of Allegiant Stadium prioritized sustainability and supports the Stadium's mission of diversion, reduction, and optimization. In fact, the stadium is the first NFL stadium to be powered by 100% renewable energy.

Allegiant Stadiums Sustainability Practices:

There is nothing like delicious game-day food. Allegiant Stadium currently diverts, reuses, and repurposes 20 different material waste streams, one ofallegiant stadium recycling bin and grass feeding stacked which is food waste. So hot dogs and hamburger scraps from Sunday’s game will not be going to the landfill; instead, they will be processed into livestock feed and given to the Las Vegas Livestock local farm.

The NFL plays on a natural grass field that is continuously mowed and groomed for appearance and performance. Allegiant Stadium reuses these grass clippings for composting. In addition, the facility has a biomass machine that can reduce materials (like grass clippings) into biochar (plant-based charcoal), which can be used for decontamination practices, wastewater treatment, and more. Also, as Allegiant Stadium is home to the Las Vegas Raiders, the NFL team has been donating their used grass fields to the Las Vegas Livestock so it could be used as bedding!

The Allegiant Stadium uses LED lighting and a light management system, which allows for the light intensity to vary based on the nature of events. In addition, the lights are on schedule to save energy during non-event operational hours. While you watch Usher's performance at this year’s half-time show, rest assured that the light changes are all energy-efficient!

These three practices just scratch the surface of the many sustainability efforts Allegiant Stadium has made. To find out more about their variety of programs, please visit their website.

Choose Sustainability and You'll Always Be on the Winning Team.

If you’re hosting a Super Bowl party, make it sustainable with these easy tips.super bowl web (2)

#1 Choose Reusable :When it comes to party supplies, use reusable plates and silverware to help reduce the amount of single-use plastic plates and silverware you are using.

#2 Have a Plan for Food:25 SWACO Super Bowl IG Everyone loves a game-time snack but don't just plan a fun party menu, have a thoughtful plan for leftovers too. When shopping for ingredients, have a list handy so that you only buy the quantities of items needed for the number of guests you’re feeding; and remember to eat your leftovers. Send guests home with leftovers for tomorrow's lunch or get creative and reinvent leftover chicken wings into a new dish.

#3 Recycle, Recycle, Recycle3 : Did you know that paper, aluminum and some plastic cups are now accepted for recycling? To help your guests, set out a clearly marked recycling bin (and consider printing and hanging this pre-made sign or creating your own) so guests know where to put those empty cups, bottles and cans.
