In 2016, SWACO’s largest grant, almost a half million dollars, was provided to the Task Force to provide community education, support the 24/7 crime reporting website – itsacrime.org, investigate illegal dumping and littering cases, prosecute environmental crimes and cleanup blighted sites.
Last year the Task Force:
•Fielded 2,110 reports – a 67% increase over reports the year before
•Convicted 22 defendants of 31 environmental crimes
•Sentenced defendants collectively to serve over 13 years in jail
•Required defendants to pay approximately $50,000 in fines and restitution
•Required defendants to serve 160 hours of community service conducting cleanups in Franklin County
•Reinvested $5,300 back into the community
•Saved taxpayers $560,000
Active illegal dumping or littering cases were in the cities of Columbus and Whitehall, Perry, Hamilton and Jefferson Townships, the Village of Lockbourne and the Linden community.
There are currently no significant illegal dumpsites located in Franklin County.
