[ARCHIVED] SWACO Measuring Economic Impacts of Local Recycling Industry

Central Ohio’s local economy is strong. It was recently ranked number one for population, job and wage growth and Ohio was recognized by Forbes this past February as the best state in America in which to launch a startup business.

Several years ago, the Institute for Local Self-Reliance determined recycling and reuse to be “an economic tool as well as an environmental tool.” To measure the extent recycling and reuse impact Franklin County’s economy and to gather more up-to-date local information, SWACO has hired DSM Environmental Services, Inc. to collect and analyze data on area businesses working in the recycling and remanufacturing industry.

SWACO is inviting the community to help identify businesses that offer some type of recycling service or that use recycled feedstock in their products. Suggestions can be submitted through this link, also accessible at swaco.org, on or before October 6, 2017.

As a part of the project, SWACO plans to help connect participating commercial partners with industries demanding recycled feedstocks or those seeking recycling services to help their business grow. SWACO also plans to use the results to inform the creation of incentives that help to boost the local recycling and reuse economy.

“Recycling and the reuse of materials provide significant economic benefit which aren’t always highlighted,” said Kyle O’Keefe, Director of Innovation and Programs for SWACO. “Activities ranging from repair services, reuse and the resale of goods to the manufacturing of new products from recycled materials all create local jobs and revenue for our communities.” O’Keefe continued, “We’re inviting the community to help us by logging in (to our website) and taking a brief survey to identify as many of these businesses as possible, large or small.”

In addition, the project will:

  • Identify active players in the recycling and reuse industries in Central Ohio, and those who rely on, or would like to increase their use of recycled feedstock(s);
  • Identify gaps and/or opportunities to strengthen these identified industries through development of a grant program targeting their needs and other technical support;
  • Quantify the economic contribution these industries provide to the region so that this data can be used to promote the industry; and,
  • Make this information available to help connect organizations within Central Ohio with those that perform recycling and remanufacturing services.

Survey findings will be available later this year.
