Celebrate Halloween and Keep Bags Out of the Landfill

halloweenThe second annual Old Hilliard Halloween Haunt is slated for Saturday, October 21, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. to noon in Old Hilliard on Main Street. Parking is available at the Franklin County Fairgrounds.

Activities include the infamous Scavenger Hunt with prizes, trick or treating at local businesses, witches hat game, strolling entertainment, music and costume contest at 11:30 am. Costume Contest categories are: Best of Show Age 0-5, Best of Show Age 6-10, Best of Show Age 11-17, Best of Show Family/Group/Couple, and Best of Show Pet.

“New this year, we have 3,000 Trick or Treat Bags to give away thanks to SWACO. Bring your plastic grocery bag and trade for a nice reusable bag at one of our three information booths located along Main Street. Help us reach our goal of collecting 2,000 disposable plastic bags from reaching the landfill,” stated Christy Clark with Destination Hilliard and Old Hilliard Inc.

Every year, over a million tons of waste is sent to the Franklin County Sanitary Landfill. Of that, more than 70-percent could be recycled of which nearly 30% is plastic.

SWACO's competitive Event Waste Reduction Grant program seeks to fund innovative approaches to waste reduction and recycling. In 2017, the program awarded $25,000 to six local events. It was under this program that Destination Hilliard received $2,000 to purchase 3,000 reusable cloth bags to give to youth participating in the Old Hilliard Halloween Haunt. Bring Me Back

"Plastic bags present challenges for local recyclers and at the landfill. We applaud Hilliard's efforts to reduce the amount of plastic entering the waste stream and to simultaneously educate kids in a fun way about the importance of waste reduction, reuse and recycling," said Hanna Greer-Brown, SWACO's Communication Manager.

SWACO also awarded grants to Upper Arlington's Labor Day Arts Festival, Dublin Irish Festival, Columbus Italian Festival, Short North's Highball Halloween and the Ohio State University to study tailgate recycling before football games.

The mission of Old Hilliard Inc. is to strengthen our community through activities and promotion in downtown Hilliard that improves economic growth for local businesses.
