About Us - Collaboration Opportunities

The Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio (SWACO) serves Franklin County and neighboring areas with solutions for solid waste. We are one of 52 solid waste districts created by the Ohio General Assembly in 1989. These districts were established with the mission of reducing reliance on landfills. Acting upon that mission, SWACO provides consumers recycling opportunities around Franklin County at our recycling drop off-locations.

Household Hazardous Waste Collection

To help residents dispose of Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) in an environmentally safe manner, a permanent HHW drop-off site is available to residents free of charge. We schedule multiple mobile collections for HHW during the spring, summer and fall. For trash that cannot be recycled, we operate the Franklin County Sanitary Landfill and two transfer stations.

Community Outreach

SWACO's community outreach program works with communities in SWACO's jurisdiction (Franklin County, OH) to provide assistance with marketing, contracts, and other needs in order to keep recycling in the forefront.

We also offer leadership and advice for businesses wishing to begin waste diversion programs. Our community outreach and partnerships also include exhibits at the world renown Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, The Center for Science and Industry (COSI), and The Martin Luther King Arts Complex.

Tours & Programs

Tours of SWACO's Franklin County Sanitary Landfill continue to be a big hit with students of all ages. Each year, thousands of students see first-hand why it's important to reduce, reuse and recycle! Other program offerings provided by SWACO include assistance to school districts for the implementation recycling programs.
