Franklin County sends 1 million pounds of food to the landfill every single day. Reducing that number begins with understanding the true value of food. When food is discarded, all of the limited and precious natural resources required to produce our food are lost. The money expended to grow, harvest, transport and store food is lost. And, sadly, the opportunity to feed vulnerable men, women and children in Central Ohio is wasted.
SWACO’s teacher lesson plans and student activities help students re-frame their view of the food they eat and begin to see the land, nutrition, water, energy, labor and money that our food represents. The resources encourage students to use that knowledge in order to waste less food at home and at school.
