SWACO and Partners Light Up Downtown Columbus for Earth Month

SWACO is partnering with several downtown Columbus buildings to highlight the central Ohio region’s commitment to waste reduction and recycling. In April, the LeVeque Tower (50 W. Broad St.), Columbus City Hall (90 W. Broad St.) and the Franklin County Government Tower (373 S. High St.) will all light up green in celebration of Earth Month.

“Earth Month is an opportunity for central Ohioans to come together and do their part,” said Joe Lombardi, executive director of SWACO. “Partnering with the LeVeque Tower, City Hall, and Franklin County Government Tower underscores the commitment in central Ohio for sustainable efforts. Whether that’s safely getting rid of household waste or just being more mindful of everyday choices. These events remind us how small actions can add up to measurable change.”

“Lighting the Franklin County Government Tower green this April is a symbol of our commitment to our residents, to our region, and to the planet we all share,” said President John O’Grady. “The Board of Commissioners is dedicated to leaving this community better than we found it, for future generations of Franklin County residents.”

“Lighting City Hall in green celebrates our shared commitment to strengthening our community by caring for the environment,” said Mayor Andrew J. Ginther.  “Earth Month serves as a reminder to do our part to reduce waste and conserve resources, so we may improve conditions in every neighborhood. Together, we can build lasting habits that will benefit our neighborhoods for generations to come.”

SWACO is supporting several community-focused events designed to make it easy for residents to support a cleaner, healthier environment.

The Dublin HHW event is an opportunity to recycle more than paper. In addition to old documents, residents can drop off Styrofoam packaging materials, e-waste, and gently used textiles. Clothing, linens and other items will be donated to Goodwill.

Additionally, Drug Take-Back Day is a national event where residents can safely dispose of unneeded medications that could otherwise cause harm to children and pets if accidentally ingested or misused.

SWACO staff will also be on hand at a variety of events throughout the month to answer recycling, composting and proper disposal questions, including:

  • Upper Arlington Sustainability Fair at the Tremont Rd Library – April 11th from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Grove City EcoFest at Grove City Town Center – April 18th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Green Columbus Earth Day Festival at Scioto Audubon Center – April 26th from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
