Shop Secondhand for Spring Sports Banquets, Recitals and Graduation Parties

A sign saying "Thrift Store"

Did you ever hear your parents or grandparents say, “waste not, want not?” This phrase, which dates back hundreds of years, still resonates today. That’s because more and more consumers are realizing the impact of the huge amount of waste that our society generates daily. This is due to a variety of factors, including a greater awareness of the environmental impact of waste.

One way that area residents can help reduce waste is by embracing the concept of “conscious consumerism,” says Amy Densborn, outreach program administrator with SWACO.

The idea behind conscious consumerism is to think about the full lifecycle of something before purchasing, including choosing to shop locally and secondhand.

Taking small, simple steps at home or while out shopping this spring can start to make a big impact on our landfill and the environment.

Practice conscious consumerism when you shop second-hand, rent or DIY these items commonly used at banquets, recitals and parties.

  1. Invitations – go paperless! Use social media or email to distribute invites.
  2. Tablecloths, napkins and runners
  3. Decorations and center pieces
  4. Banners and backdrops
  5. A new-to-you outfit for the special occasion
  6. Rent or borrow tables and chairs
  7. Use what you already have before sourcing new products.

By making thoughtful choices when it comes to shopping for events this spring, we can reduce waste and contribute to a more sustainable future. Whether it’s reusing items, shopping secondhand, or embracing DIY solutions, every small step counts in protecting our planet and minimizing our environmental impact.
