Happy Earth Month

Earth Day Plant Growing

It’s a time of year when we celebrate the earth and our place in it, when we take note of how the world is changing around us and make a note of the things we can do to protect our environment. Earth Month is an opportunity for reflection and to renew our commitment to sustainability, and it’s the biggest month of the year at SWACO.

We’re happy to be working this month with Columbus Micro Systems to sponsor electronics recycling opportunities throughout the community, and to host a Trash To Treasure event as part of the 8th annual COSI STEAM Science Festival. We’re also sponsoring a Household Hazardous Waste collection event this month in Dublin and happy to help promote the Hilliard Recycling Drive. Remember to recycle for earth day

Bins Got You Guessing?

You may know that 76% of what comes to the landfill every day could have been reused, recycled, or composted, but do you know what bin to put it all in?  Junk mail goes in the recycling bin, but what about plastic clamshell containers?  Plastic cups can be recycled too, and so can over-the-county pill bottles, but do you know where to take empty prescription bottles?  How about batteries or appliances?  It’s easy to default to just putting things in the trash when we’re not sure or we’re too busy to take the time to figure it out, but SWACO can help.

First, Pause.

Recycling Right isn’t about being perfect.  It’s about making better choices when you can.  One of the simplest ways to do that is to pause before throwing something away to ask if there’s a better option.  Click here for a full guide to all the bins and what goes where.

Upcoming Events

Hazardous Waste

SWACO has a Household Hazardous Waste drop off location available to residents all year long in Columbus and is also proud to sponsor local collection events throughout the community each summer. The first one of this year is coming up on April 11th at the Dublin Service Center from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Click here for a full list of what’s accepted and to find a collection point near you.

National Drug Takeback Day

It’s easy to forget about an old prescription in the medicine cabinet, but those old drugs can be a danger to our families and even our pets. Each year, SWACO is pleased to take part in two National Drug Takeback day events in which you can drop off old medicines at participating law enforcement agencies for responsible disposal.  Click here to learn more and find a participating agency.

Recycle Right Webinar

Spring is the season for graduation parties and celebration!  Tune in to this upcoming SWACO Recycle Right webinar to learn tips for how to host complete parties with less waste.  When it comes to decorations and serving food and party favors, there are simple switches you can make to create a big difference in what’s leftover when the party is done.  Click here  to register for this free one-hour webinar streaming at noon on April 29th.
