Discover what happens after your trash is collected. A guided tour of the Franklin County Sanitary Landfill offers a behind-the-scenes look at modern waste management and how everyone can help create a more sustainable Central Ohio. 

Whether you're part of a business, neighborhood association, senior living community, youth organization, civic group or another organized group, you're invited to explore the Franklin County Sanitary Landfill through a guided tour. 

Each tour is customized to the interests and age of your group, offering an engaging look at how Central Ohio's waste is managed and the role everyone plays in reducing waste. 

Community and group tours are available by reservation Monday through Friday. Tours last approximately 90 minutes. 

 What to Expect 

Your visit begins with an educational presentation that explores: 

  • How a modern sanitary landfill is designed, operated and monitored  
  • The engineering and environmental safeguards that protect our community  
  • How recycling, composting and waste reduction help conserve landfill space  
  • Simple ways residents and organizations can reduce waste every day  

Following the presentation, participants will take a guided driving tour of the active landfill in a SWACO vehicle or bus. Guests will visit the landfill's working face to observe daily operations and learn how waste is safely managed. For safety, all participants remain inside the vehicle throughout the tour. 

Tour Information 

  • Tours are available by appointment only.
  • Tours are offered Monday through Friday
  • Most tours last approximately 90 minutes.
  • Presentations are tailored to the group's interests and age level.

* Masks are optional for visitors while in our facilities and on the landfill tour.
