The team at Green Bexley is making the most of their Community Waste Reduction Grant from SWACO in a new reuse project that’s aimed at eliminating single-use plastic takeout containers. In partnership with Okapi and six local restaurants in walkable downtown Bexley, the team has distributed reusable, washable takeout containers that patrons can use for carryout food or as a doggy bag. When they’re done with it, they just return it to any of the participating restaurants (it doesn’t have to be the one from which they originally got it) to be washed and used again.
The whole thing is organized through an app with QR code check-ins and outs, and Green Bexley is leading the public engagement efforts, including education, training and marketing. All in all, the team hopes to eliminate more than 13,000 single-use containers each year, keeping all of that material waste out of Franklin County’s landfill, and providing a sustainable recipe for other communities and restaurants to follow in the years to come.
