Spending a little more time offline is finding its way into everyday routines, making room for hobbies, creativity, and time with friends. From craft nights and journaling to book clubs and game nights, there are plenty of ways to put the phone down and enjoy something hands-on.
Maybe you’ve already noticed it in your own routine. You pick up a hobby you’ve been meaning to try. You visit the library instead of buying a new book. You spend an afternoon at a thrift store. Or you invite friends over for dinner or a game night.
These activities can be a great way to spend time together, try something new and make use of things you already have. There are several opportunities to reuse along the way.
Put Your Creativity to Work
Crafting is one way to spend time away from a screen, whether you’re trying something new or getting together with friends for a craft night.
Before buying new supplies, take a look at what you already have. Thrift stores can also be a great place to find materials and supplies for creative projects, from fake flowers and containers to scrap wood and other items that can be reused in new ways. An old T-shirt could become fabric for a project. Scraps of paper could be used for a collage. Leftover yarn could become part of a new creation, and an unused frame could get a new purpose.
Junk journaling is another creative way to reuse everyday items. Ticket stubs, packaging, receipts, old cards and other paper scraps can become part of a journal instead of being thrown away.
Try a New Hobby
Maybe there’s a hobby you’ve been wanting to try. Gardening, baking, photography, painting, puzzles and other activities can all give you a reason to spend some time away from a screen.
Getting started doesn’t always require buying everything new.
Check a thrift store for used equipment or supplies. Ask a friend if you can borrow something. Look for materials you already have at home. You may even find that something you no longer use can become part of your new hobby.
Finding a new purpose for something you already own is reuse, too.
Get Lost in a Good Book
Reading is another easy way to spend some time offline.
Your local library is a great place to find something new to read. You can discover a new author, revisit a favorite or finally pick up that book you’ve been meaning to try.
Used bookstores and book swaps are another way to keep books in use and give them another reader.
You can also make reading a social activity. Start a book club, swap recommendations with friends or set aside time to read together.
Get Together
Spending time offline doesn’t have to mean spending time alone.
Invite friends over for a craft night, dinner, or game night. Start a clothing swap. Cook a meal together. Plan an afternoon around a hobby you all enjoy.
Gatherings can also be an easy place to reuse. Use the dishes, glasses and serving pieces you already have. Borrow something from a friend instead of buying it for one occasion. Bring out decorations you’ve used before, or find a new way to use something you already own.

There are plenty of reasons to spend time online, and staying connected digitally is part of everyday life. But as more of us make time for hobbies, creative projects and getting together with friends, there are plenty of opportunities for reuse along the way.
Whether you’re picking up an old hobby, trying something new or spending time with friends, look for ways to use what you already have, borrow what you need or give something a second life.
