Why Focus on Recycling?
SWACO has a goal to increase Franklin County's recycling rate. Sixty percent (60%) of waste disposed in the Franklin County Sanitary Landfill is from the "commercial sector" - including retail businesses, manufacturing facilities, and multifamily housing complexes. A recent study conducted by SWACO indicates that 78% of the material disposed from the commercial sector has the potential to be diverted from the landfill through recycling or composting. In fact, "fiber," which includes corrugated cardboard and paper, made up almost 32% of the material disposed - almost 1/3 of everything disposed from the business sector!
We can do better, and we know that a lot of central Ohio businesses are looking to start or improve their recycling and composting programs to meet their own sustainability goals.
