Franklin County Is Going Green In A Whole New Way

Franklin County is Going Green

This week, SWACO and the City of Columbus wrapped up Earth Month by officially opening our region’s first and only Class II composting facility at the Alum Creek Waste & Reuse Convenience Center.  It will be used to turn the food scraps that are dropped off at the city’s free food waste drop-off sites into high-quality compost that will be donated to the city’s network of community gardens.

The new composter is just one part of SWACO’s Greenprint For a Sustainable Future which is reimagining SWACO programs, seizing new opportunities, and bringing new infrastructure and technology to the region.  Click HERE to learn more about the new composter and to find a free food waste drop-off site near you.

Worthington Recycling Convenience Center Opening Next Week

SWACO and the city of Worthington will be cutting a recyclable ribbon on Friday, May 8th to open our region’s newest Recycling Convenience Center.  The facility is made possible in large part through a grant from SWACO and can accept many harder-to-recycle items such as electronics, Styrofoam, car batteries, anti-freeze and motor oil, and food scraps.  In addition, residents without access to curbside recycling can use the facility to drop off the things that usually go in curbside carts such as paper and cardboard, metal cans, glass bottles, and plastic tubs.

Upcoming Events

  • Westerville Repair Cafe: On May 9th, the Westerville Public Library and Sustainable Westerville are hosting the first ever repair cafe event in the United States that is aimed at extending the life of our residents’ computers and laptops by installing the Linux operating system on machines that can no longer run Windows.  Click HERE to learn more about how you can bring your old computer back to life.
  • Recycle Right: Planning a move?  Let SWACO help you make that a little less wasteful.  Moving can be stressful but it can also be a good time to clean out your closets and get rid of stuff you don’t use anymore.  Unfortunately, that can lead to a lot of waste.  Join SWACO for a one-hour webinar on May 20th to learn what to do with unwanted items, where to take hard-to-recycle materials, and how to cut down on waste while packing. Register HERE.
  • Landfill Tour: Did you know that you can tour the landfill?  Join us on Saturday, May 30th for a fun and informative tour of the landfill to learn all about how SWACO safely manages all of our community’s waste, as well as some of the actions that you can take to help reduce your reliance on the landfill by reusing, recycling, and composting.  This free tour takes about an hour and a half, and is open to any Franklin County resident.  Register today!
