Recycling, Shopping and Sustainability

Recycling bin

It’s not always easy to know what can go in your household recycling bin, what needs to be dropped off at a special location, and what can’t be recycled at all.  What do the numbers on the bottom of a plastic bottle mean? Can electronics be recycled? How about aluminum foil or metal clothes hangers? An old bicycle? Don’t worry. SWACO is here to give you the answers you need to be a confident recycler.  Join the one-hour Recycle Right At Home webinar, August 27th at noon to learn how to recycle the right way, conserve resources, reduce our reliance on landfills, and support the local economy. Ohio Sales Tax Holiday Extended

Did you hear that Ohio’s Sales Tax Holiday has been extended this year? What is typically a one-weekend event for shoppers has been extended through August 14. This is a great way to save money if you need to purchase something new or second hand for back-to-school. Visit www.tax.ohio.gov for more details.

There’s Still Time To Recycle Your Old Clothing This Summer

Old clothes

Did you know that every year, Ohioans throw away about 30 million pounds of old clothing and textiles? Even if you donate your old clothes, they only get repurposed if they’re in good shape and can be resold. Torn, stained, or worn-out clothing and textiles typically end up being put into landfills or incinerated in very low-income communities in Africa or Asia, and there typically haven’t been any good options to recycle these unwanted fabrics.

This summer, SWACO is piloting a program to recycle end-of-life clothing that can’t be resold. Click here to learn more and find a drop-off site near you, or visit one of the upcoming pop-up drop-off locations:
