Many libraries across central Ohio offer more than just books, CDs and records for their patrons to borrow. These libraries provide a nontraditional lending program to borrow items such as tools, binoculars, guitars, puzzles, portable projectors, tables and chairs.
Our neighborhood libraries are taking part in the shared economy by offering members no-cost access to goods that may not be practical for a household to buy and maintain or by simply providing the opportunity for a person to test out the new item before making a financial investment.
The shared ownership of materials promotes sustainable consumption to avoid unnecessary goods being purchased and sitting in a garage or basement collecting dust before the inevitable purge to a donation center or even worse, to the curb for the final resting place – the landfill. If you can save money and space in your house by borrowing items that you don’t need frequently, why wouldn’t you?
There are at least three library systems in central Ohio that offer a nontraditional lending program for patrons. The Grandview Heights Library, Westerville Library and Worthington Library. Each library has different lending durations and policies for borrowing, so double-check with your local library before checking items out.
